Meet the 2026-2027 Committee

Georgie Dean-Brophy
PRESIDENT
Hi, I’m Georgie Dean-Brophy, a fourth-year medical student and this year’s President of BSMS SurgSoc. Having been involved with the Society in various roles since Year 1, it has been a huge part of my medical school experience and is something I’m incredibly passionate about. I’m particularly interested in orthopaedics, especially trauma and limb reconstruction, and am currently exploring these interests through my Independent Research Project using BoneFinder to investigate ankle fractures. In my final year, I’m hoping to undertake a trauma elective in South Africa to gain experience in a different clinical setting. As President, I’m excited to expand opportunities for surgical skills development and inspire more students to explore a career in surgery.

Gurleen Kaur
Vice-PRESIDENT
Hi! I'm Gurleen, a 3rd year med student and SurgSoc VP. I’ve always been loved anatomy and the more practical side of medicine, which is what started my initial interest in surgery. I’m still keeping an open mind about which speciality I’d like to pursue, but T&O and vascular surgery are areas I’d love to learn more about. I joined SurgSoc to get involved in more hands-on opportunities, explore different surgical specialities beyond the curriculum and get a better idea of what life in a surgical career can actually looks like. Outside of med school, I’m always up for trying something new and learning something I can’t get from a textbook!

Beth Abrams
Secretary
Hey I’m Beth, secretary of BSMS SurgSoc. I’ve heard that you figure out pretty quickly if you are someone who can see themselves in a career in theatre or not. While I have fancied the idea from the start (cough…Grey’s Anatomy…cough), it’s often not until you see the inside of a body and experience the team dynamic that you get a real sense of it. Year 1 dissection gave me my first clue and then scrubbing in gave me second and here I am - on a long career journey that SurgSoc is part of! I have found myself in more trauma & orthopaedic environments so far compared to other specialties (the most theatre time, conferences and even my IRP) but am also keen to explore plastics. The complete opposite side of a very similar coin. SurgSoc has been fantastic for starting to make sense of all the hoops that need to be jumped through, setting me on the right track, and meeting the right people to support me along the way. Surgery doesn’t have to be your final decision but if it’s even a question in your mind then we look forward to meeting you!

Raghav Anirudh
Treasurer
Hi, I’m Raghav, a fourth-year medical student and this year’s Treasurer for BSMS SurgSoc. I’ve been an active member of the committee since 2024, previously serving as Secretary and Suturing Lead. Over the past two years, I’ve seen our society expand significantly, broadening surgical skills training for medical students and introducing outreach programmes for local secondary schools. As Treasurer, my goal is to sustain this momentum and fund even more high-impact events and workshops for our member.

Ermis Skopelitis
WELFARE OFFICER
I am Ermis, I am the welfare representative, a 5th year student who has been with the BSMS surgsoc since 3rd year. I am interested in trauma and orthopaedics. I joined surgsoc as a suturing teacher and continued as lead in 4th year. I joined surgsoc because I really wanted to better my suturing abilities and help others do the same. I am looking forward to continuing with surgsoc this year and seeing the society improve.
